This tour lasts an hour and is devoted to the artists’ ultimate masterpiece Conceived by Monet in the aftermath of the First World War, the project of donating large-scale decorations featuring Water Lilies to the French State led the artist to prolong his experiments around the series’ principle. He provided them with a scale and size that had no previous equivalent in his body of work. Although much affected by the deaths of his loved ones and ill health, Monet, with the help of his old friend Clemenceau, continued with his research into ways of expressing variations of light and the ever-changing appearance of his garden in Giverny. This tour reveals the Water Lilies project’s genesis and the various stages it went through. It highlights the unchanging components of Monet’s body of work along with the project’s unprecedented aspect, a true “installation” ahead of its time.
Depending on the paintings on exhibition on the day of the tour, it will also feature a contemporary counterpoint in the form of several works by a present-day artist echoing the Water Lilies.
If the dialogue between Monet’s work and works by contemporary artists is important to your visit approach, please check dates of counterpoints here before requesting a booking.
