Entropie (Entropy) is the result of Léo Lérus’ research on the synergy between the aesthetics of contemporary dance and those of his Caribbean cultural legacy.
His career path has led him from traditional dance, Gwo-ka, to the Choreographic Ensemble at the National Higher Conservatory of Music and Dance (CNSMDP) in Paris, and then to an international career as a performer, in particular with the Batsheva Dance Company. Since then, he has been creating his own choreographies, including Entropie, which he has transmitted to the CNSMDP’s Choreographic Ensemble.
Léo Lérus, Entropie (extracts)
Choreography by Léo Lérus, performed by the National Higher Conservatory of Music and Dance (CNSMDP) in Paris’ Choreographic Ensemble
Musical Concept: Léo Lérus and Gilbert Nouno
Every year, the CNSMDP Choreographic Ensemble performs a wide range of pieces from neoclassical and contemporary repertoires. Creations are also commissioned from some of the most up-to-the-minute and demanding choreographers, to be performed every year at the Paris Conservatory and then on tour in France and abroad. After staging a piece by Hofesh Schechter in 2024, the Ensemble returns to the Orangerie with a choreography by Léo Lérus, Entropie, the result of the choreographer’s research on development of an awareness, a knowledge, a signature and tools as a Guadeloupian creator in the world of contemporary dance. The piece has its roots in François Roddier’s research on thermo-bio-sociology and explores the phenomena of systems, energy, loss of balance, order and chaos. Léo Lérus aspires to a form of contemporary dance intrinsically connected with the musicality and physicality of Gwo-Ka and other Caribbean dances. He incorporates themes and subjects from Léwòz, carnival and the Guadeloupian identity. His work builds on the creations of other artists rooted in Guadeloupian culture, so contributing to the development of contemporary dance in Guadeloupe and beyond.
