Dance among the Water Lilies • COMPAGNIE Marie Chouinard, Étude n°1 (360°)
7 pm and 8.30 pm, Water Lilies Room

With a blue rectangle as the only set, open to the resonance of the irons on the dancer’s soles, Marie Chouinard creates a wild, seemingly out-of-phase, geometrical dance. Here, the body becomes a pretext for a series of movements that are sometimes disjointed, sometimes undulating, with music serving as their extension. Quebec electroacoustic composer Louis Dufort has been a regular collaborator with the company since 1998.
A leading figure in contemporary dance, Quebec choreographer Marie Chouinard is back in Paris (at the Théâtre de la Ville with MAGNIFICAT and with Henri Michaux: Mouvements) and at the Musée de l'Orangerie with Étude n°1. Set in the Water Lilies rooms, this solo piece resonates with Monet's large painted panels.
Both wild and refined, this dance, in which the dancer's steps snap and composer Louis Dufort's music magnifies the intensities that run through the bodies and resist language, is like looking through a magnifying glass. The moving bodies of the COMPAGNIE's virtuoso performers are to be understood as a space for investigation, which reinvents itself before the audience's eyes, multiplying states of grace. The sumptuous, sensual, and “raw” movement that has become the choreographer's signature probes the insoluble mystery of the body and of life as it flows.
